BRADY COLONY IN TEXASC. P. EKLUND is from Skåne but happened to
settle among people from Småland in Texas many years ago , and has
become comfortable among them. In their old age, he and his wife
live in a large and modern home on their prop erty outside Brady.
H e has leased out most of his 321 acre farm and he now takes life
a little easier than before. He was born in Västanå, Näsum parish,
Kristianstad, in 1857. His father, Pehr Carlson, was a carpenter.
To provide bette r for his family and possibly to create a home
for his family, the father went to America as early as 1868, and
lived in Galesburg, Ill. But his and his family's hopes were
crushed on his first day out on a construction site as he got
heat-s troke and died. His wife and seven small children were now
left at home in Sweden with meager means. The son therefore had to
support himself from a very early age. He trained to be blacksmith
at Bäckaskog, a royal estat e by Ifösjön, during the reign of the
"blessed" king, Karl XV's time. This was when he changed his name
to Eklund. In 1878 Mr. Eklund immigrated and came to Chicago. He
stayed there for only two years and then moved to Batavia, Ill. w
here he lived for four years. He married Miss Emma Anderson from
Kattarp, Malmöhus region, Skåne, where she was born i n 1866. The
family moved to Texas in 1884, and they first settled in Dallas,
but after a year they moved to Austin, wh ere Mr. Eklund lived for
27 years. Mr. Eklund had his own blacksmith's shop on Lavaca, a
prosperous business that made h im wealthy and financially
independent. In addition to his beautiful farm in Brady, he also
owns his home and one othe r property in Austin. The Eklunds moved
to McCulloch County in 1912, after selling the shop in Austin.
They wanted to e nj oy country life in their old age and the nice
climate in West Texas. Mrs. Eklund went to Sweden in 1885, mostly
because of her health and returned well and strong after a year.
The coupl e has four children but two sons died at a young age.
Oscar 1892, died 1895, Carl1896, died 1909. Their daughters Elle n
1887 and Lillie 1889, are both married. The former was married to
George Nelson in Fort Worth, who died in 1918, and t he latter is
married to Reinhold Pearson in Austin. Mr. Eklund and his family
have belonged to the Swedish Methodist Ch ur ch for many years and
has held many positions there. He has followed the activities with
great interest and has always b een ready to take an active role.
