Levnadsbeskrivning

Carolyn Beaty Patterson writes: "The story about Oscar my
Grandfather is his father couldn't afford to bring him in 1886 .
Oscar stayed with his grandparents. The next year he made the trip
with his schoolteacher who came to Chicago. The tea cher sent a
letter to Monmouth saying Oscar was in Chicago with her so John
Matson his father could come and get him. Th e letter went to the
wrong John Matson. The school teacher waited and waited to hear
from John Matson. She almost put Os car in a orphangage. I think
the other John Matson lived outin the country from Monmouth. After
several weeks he brought the letter into town and gave i t to
Oscar's father. Oscar's father took the train the next day to
Chicago to get Oscar. So poor little Oscar must hav e been afraid
he would never h is folks again." Dödsnotis i tidningen: "Oscar
Matson died late last night at the home of his daughter, Mrs.
Clyde Darrah of Rural Route, where he had made hi s home foe the
past year. Mr. Matson had been in poor health for that period of
time. The son of John A. and Bessie (Nels on) Matson, he was born
in Sweden, March 12, 1882, and came to this country at the age of
six, spending his entire lifet ime in this community. He was
confirmed inthe First Lutheran church of which he was a lifetime
member. Mr. Matson was a cigarmaker by trade, and also had been
caretaker of the First Lutheran church here f rom 1916 until
1960.His marriage to Carline Olson took place December 28, 1904
and she preceded him in heath, May 11, 19 52. Survivors include
two daughters: Mrs. Clyde (Evelyn) Darrah and Mrs. Edwin (Louise)
Beaty of Monmouth, as well as fo ur grandchildren and seven great
grandchildren. One sister, Mrs. Co. O. Bengtson of Maywood, also
survives as do numerous nieces, nephews an d other relatives.
Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by
twobrothers and two sisters.Funeral service s will be conducted,
Monday, at 2 p.m. at the First Lutheran church in charge of the
pastor, the Rev. Raymond Swanson, w ith burial in Monmouth
cemetery. The family will receive visitors at the Holliday and
Hoover Memorial Cha pel, Sunday, from 7 p.m. until 8:30. Those who
wish, may contribute to a memorial fund for the First Lutheran
church in memory of Mr. Matson, and contributio ns may be left at
the funeral home or at the church." Thomas E. Bengtson berättar:
"He played in a band called Dickens Orchestra circa 1900. Name
spelled Sven Oskar in early Monmouth church records. "Sven Oscar
Mattson" dropped from church rolls in Monmouth, Il linois, on
December 29, 1907. However, he was a church caretaker for a long
time. According to the notes of Howard Matson, Oscar worked for a
time at the Arsenal in Rock Island. He would take a streetca r
from Monmouth to Rock Island, live there, and return to Monmouth
over the weekends."
