The Monmouth Daily Review Atlas 19/11 1954: "Hilding F. Matson
Died Last Night. Hilding F. Matson, former Warren country
treasurer and life long resident of Monmouth, died at Monmouth
hospital Thursda y night. He was admitted to the hospital November
7.Hilding Matson was the youngest of six children of Mr. and Mrs.
Joh n Matson and was born April 10, 1893. He was married July 19,
1919 to Edna Melburg who survives with three children, How ard of
Harvey, Dorothy Jeanne Johnson of Waukegan, an d Robert of this
city. There are four grandchildren, Eric, Linnea, and Alan Matson
and Lynnette Johnson.Surviving also a re two brothers, Nels A. and
Oscar of Monmouth, and two sisters, Mrs. Olga Seaton of Monmouth
and Mrs. Edith Bengston [s ic] of Maywood, Ill. The parents and
one sister, Mrs. Hilma Wise, are deceased. Mr. Matson was educated
in the Monmout h schools and was a graduate of Brown's Business
college in Galesburg. While working in Duluth, Minn., he was
inducted i nto the U. S. Army in World War I, and was in the Coast
Artillery, stationed at the Presidio in San Franci sco.Upon his
return in December, 1918, he was appointed deputy county treasurer
under the late W. D. Marshall. In 1922 h e was elected county
treasurer and remained in this office until he accepted a position
as auditor of Western Stonewar e in J une 1927. He served as
secretary-treasurer there for many years and was active till three
weeks ago. Baptised and confirmed in the First Lutheran church, he
was a faithful and active member his entire life, serving as a c
hoir member, choir director, trustee for several terms, and
treasurer for many years. Mr. Matson was also a member of Rotary,
Masons, American Legion, Elks, and served as a member of the board
of director s of the Monmouth Chamber of Commerce. His chief
interests were always his home, family and church. Funeral
services are planned for 2:30 p.m. Monday at the First Lutheran
church. Known to many as "Uncle Matt."" Thomas E. Bengtson
berättar:"Removed from church rolls in Monmouth on March 24, 1917
to Duluth, Minnesota. Lived at 31 8 26 Ave W. in Duluth. Received
into church rolls at Trinity Lutheran in Duluth onApril 1, 1917.
Called into armed force s late 1918 after a briefstin t as
financial secretary of the church. Received into church rolls in
Monmouth on December 29, 1918, arriving from Dulut h, Minnesota.
According to notes from Howard Matson, Hilding spent six weeks in
the Army and received a discharge due to some physica l
impairment."
