Thomas E. Bengtson berättar: "Oscar MATSON and Lena OLSON were
married on 28 Dec 1904.5 Lena OLSON20 was born on 23 Feb 1879 in
Åhus Skone, Sweden . She was born to Carl Olson (born November 9,
1840 in Sweden,died December 31, 1925) and Pernilla (Cederburg)
Olson (b orn May 7, 1843). She immigrated in 1882 to America.5 She
was baptized on 22 Sep 1895 in Monmouth, Warren, Illinois.23 L ena
died on 11 May 1952 at the age of 73 inMonmouth, Warren,
Illinois.5,7 The Monmouth Daily Review Atlas had an obituar y on
Monday, May 12, on page three. Unfortunately, the copy that I saw
on microfilm was not quite in focus at was frankl y illegible in
places. The headline was: Mrs. Oscar Matson Die d Yesterday. The
text was:Mrs. Oscar Matson passed away suddenly yesterday morning
at 8:30 [could be 3:30] o'clock at th e family residence, 122
South E Street. She had been in frail health for about two years,
but death was unexpected as sh e had been up and around as usual
lately. Caroline Olson was born February 23, 1879 [reported by
Marj Foster, who has a n actual newspaper clipping.] at Obus [not
legible] Skone, Sweden, and was the daughter of Carl and Pernilla
(Cederburg ) Olson. She came to the Uni ted States when three
years of age with her parents.Her marriage to Swan Oscar Matson
took place December 28 [? not clea r], 1904, and he survives with
their two daughters, Mrs. Edwin Beaty of Monmouthand Mrs. Clyde
Darrah of Little York. Th ere are also four grandchildren, Mrs.
Caroline Patt erson, Miss Martha Beaty, Robert and James Darrah,
and two sisters, Mrs. Will Bond of Springfield and Mrs. Harry
Jones o f Des Moines, Ia. There are a number of nieces and nephews
and other relatives. Mrs. Matson was preceded in death by two
sisters, Miss Bessie Olson and Mrs. Linnie Hilsenhoff, and two
brothers, Olof a nd Anthon Olson. She was a faithful member of the
Immanuel Baptist church and her first devotion through life had
been to serve her churc h and her Lord. Gentle and kind of spirit
she had endeared herself to her familyand friends.The Rev. Victor
O. Erickso n will conduct funeral services at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at
the Immanuel Baptist church. A family prayer service will be hel d
a the Beaty home at 2 o'clock. Friends may call tonight and
tomorrow morning at the Lugg Memorial Chapel. At noon tomo rrow
the casket will be removed to the church. The family will be at
the Lugg chapel tonight from 7:30 until 9 o'clock . It was
Mother's Day. She was buried on 13 May 1952 in Monmouth, Warren,
Illinois. Lena was a B aptist, and a faithfulmember of Immanuel
Baptist Church in Monmouth. Her parents were founding members of
the church i n 1888. (Her father and one other were named deacons
at its founding.) In fact sheis also named in the organizational
me eting of September 13, 1888. However, on November 7, 1892, she
was thrown out of the church on the grounds of un-Christian-like
behavior.Eviden tly, all was well after she was baptized in 1895.
She brought her daughters to church; however, she did not
apparently i nduce her husband to join them. Church records have
her first name variously as Lina, Linne, Caroline, and Karolina.
Th e church was never very big. She had at least four sisters,
Mrs. Will Bond of Springfield and Mrs. Harry Jones of De Moi nes,
Iowa, who survived her, and Miss Bessie Olson and Mrs. Linnie
Hilsenhoff, who did not. She had at least two br others, Olof and
Anthon Olson, both of whom preceded her in death."
