Gustava Samuelson, born Oct. 22, 1846, in Elfsborgs Lan,
Vestergottland, Sweden, the daughter of John and Johanna
Samuelson.In 1869, John, Johanna, and their childr en immigrated
to the U.S. It seems that my greatgrandparents met over here in
the U.S. Both families were very involved with the Swedish
Lutheran Church, so tha t is probably where Matthew and Carolina

Record of Kane County, Illinois" Matthew Lethin is a senior member
of the firm of Lethin Brothers, leading merchant tailors in Elgin.
He is a native o f Sweden, born at Blekinge, Oct. 10, 1843, and is
a son of Pehr and Kajsa (Monson) Lethin. The father was in the
roya l navy of Sweden. When 13 years old, Matthew became an
apprentice tailor, working for nothing in the first year, and th e
next year gettings 25 cents a week. He immigrated to America in
1868, coming to Chicago where he worked at his trade , and four
months later moved to Elgin. Mr. Lethin affiliates with the
Republican Party; is a deacon and trustee in th e Swedish Lutheran
Church, and for years has been superintendent of the Sunday
School. The firm of Lethin Brothers ar e prompt and reliable in
dealings with their patrons, and the family moves in the circles
of Elgin's good society. -----------------------------------------

Lethin - who has been established as a merchant tailor in Elgin
since 1875, was born at Jemshog, Blekinge (no w called Kyrkhult)
Sweden Oct. 10, 1843. In the Spring of 1868 he landed in America,
coming to Elgin to locate the foll owing Fall. Equipped with a
common school education, and having learned the tailor's trade, he
opened a shop and is sti ll doing business under the name of
Lethin Bros.; his brother Swan being his partner. . . . Matthew
received his naturalization papers Jan. 14, 1875, after having
taught himself to speak, read, and write English.
